PCMC Cracks Down on Illegal RO Plants Amid Water Contamination Fears

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken strict action against unauthorized RO (reverse osmosis) plants supplying unsafe bottled water. The crackdown aims to prevent the outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and other waterborne diseases.

Illegal RO Plants Shut Down

During a special inspection drive, officials discovered 17 unauthorized RO plants using contaminated water for bottling. PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh stated that these plants have been ordered to close immediately. Any further violations will invite strict legal action.

Rising Water Contamination Concerns

Recent reports revealed that some water suppliers were sourcing water from borewells and open sources, which are highly susceptible to contamination. These unsafe practices put public health at serious risk. To address this issue, PCMC has ramped up inspections to shut down unregulated bottling operations.

Ward-Wise Inspection and Sealed Units

PCMC’s Water Supply Department, under Deputy City Engineer Ajay Suryavanshi, is conducting ward-wise inspections. A specialized team, including assistant engineers, junior engineers, and plumbers, has identified multiple violations:

  • F Regional Office: 2 RO plants sealed
  • D Regional Office: 2 RO plants and 7 RO ATM plants shut down
  • B Regional Office: 1 RO plant closed
  • G Regional Office: 4 RO plants sealed
  • H Regional Office: 1 RO plant shut down

GBS Cases Raise Public Health Alarms

Amid these concerns, a 36-year-old man in Pimpri-Chinchwad recently succumbed to GBS complications. This marks the third death linked to GBS in the area, further highlighting the urgency of PCMC’s preventive actions.

PCMC’s Commitment to Public Safety

The municipal corporation remains firm in its mission to ensure safe drinking water for all residents. Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and report any unauthorized water suppliers to local authorities.

This aggressive action by PCMC is a crucial step toward preventing further health risks and safeguarding the well-being of its citizens.
