
A major fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday due to a cylinder explosion. The incident occurred in Sector 19 of the tent city, engulfing 18 tents. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The fire started around 4:30 PM and was swiftly brought under control by 15 fire tenders, according to Kumbh Mela Chief Fire Officer Pramod Sharma. Prayagraj District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar confirmed that the situation was under control, adding, “There is no information about any injuries.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to inquire about the incident. The Chief Minister visited the site and reviewed the situation with officials and firefighting teams. State Minister AK Sharma praised the swift response of the fire and rescue teams, saying the fire was controlled within 20 minutes.
The official X handle of Maha Kumbh 2025 expressed sadness over the incident, stating, “The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray to Maa Ganga for everyone’s safety.” A video of thick black smoke billowing from the affected area was shared online.
The Samajwadi Party also expressed grief and urged the government to provide better safety measures for devotees. “The incident is tragic, and we pray for the safety of all pilgrims. The government must take steps to prevent such incidents in the future,” said party spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chaand.
Despite dense fog and inclement weather, the Maha Kumbh Mela has continued to see a large turnout of devotees. As of January 18, over 7.72 crore pilgrims have taken a holy dip at the Sangam. The footfall is expected to increase further with four significant Shahi Snans yet to take place.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a 45-day spiritual festival, began on January 13, 2025, and attracts millions of devotees from across India and the world.
