A horrifying incident has shaken Pune, as a 26-year-old woman was raped inside a stationary bus at the Swargate Bus Stand, just 100 metres from a police station. The crime, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious concerns about security at one of Maharashtra’s busiest transport hubs.

Details of the Incident
According to reports, the woman—a domestic worker—was waiting for a bus to her hometown when she was deceived by the accused, Dattatraya Gade (also identified as Dattatraya Ramdas). CCTV footage shows Gade approaching the victim, addressing her as ‘didi’ (sister), and misleading her by saying her bus was parked at another platform. Trusting him, she followed him to a secluded bus, where he allegedly locked the doors and assaulted her in the dark.
After the horrifying ordeal, the victim managed to escape and boarded another bus where she confided in a friend. The police were immediately informed, and an FIR was registered at Swargate Police Station.
Massive Manhunt for the Accused

The accused, who has a history of theft and chain-snatching, is still at large. Authorities have launched a massive search operation, forming multiple teams and deploying a canine unit to track him down.
In response to the crime, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik suspended 23 security guards stationed at Swargate Bus Stand for failing to prevent such a grievous act. Additionally, an inquiry has been launched against the bus depot manager and traffic controller to determine their accountability.
Public Outrage and Political Reactions
The brutal attack has triggered a wave of anger and protests across the city. Shiv Sena (UBT) workers vandalized the Swargate Bus Stand security office, smashing windows and furniture to protest against administrative negligence. Party leader Vasant More justified the act, stating, “If a woman can be raped in front of a security cabin, then nobody deserves to sit there.”
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar condemned the crime, calling it “extremely shameful, painful, and infuriating”. He assured that the accused would be caught and punished with the harshest penalty. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also taken serious note of the crime and instructed the police to expedite their investigation.

Security Lapses at Swargate Bus Stand
The Swargate Bus Stand, one of Maharashtra’s busiest transport hubs, lacks adequate security measures. The fact that such a horrific crime occurred so close to a police station has raised serious concerns about law enforcement and public safety. Authorities have now promised stricter surveillance, additional security personnel, and improved safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
Conclusion
This brutal incident highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures at public places like bus stands. The public outrage and political pressure must translate into real action to protect women and prevent such heinous crimes. As Pune reels from this shocking event, citizens demand swift justice for the victim and accountability from those responsible for public safety.
